What you need to bring
Summer swim meets are so much fun for children and their parents, but they can be very long! We do try to get the meets over as quick as possible, but sometimes factors beyond our control can mean that a meet will last longer than expected. Below is a list of items that each family should bring to every swim meet.
- A swimmer! In their team suit and wearing their team issued t-shirt. Please have your swimmer wear flip-flops. Often the grass that the swimmers tents are set-up on can be wet and sometimes muddy. We want the kids to be able to get shoes on and off quickly, but we prefer them to wear shoes so that mud does not get into the pool.
- Goggles and team swim caps - Please have spares of each.
- Towels - At least two.
- Chairs - For parents and the swimmers.
- Snacks and drinks. We do have these available at concessions too.
- Money. In case you want to buy items from the concessions stand or buy heat sheets etc.
- Sun screen!!
- Toy or game to entertain your swimmer. Please don't bring expensive equipment like ipads or kindles. If you do bring electronic devices you do so at your own risk. Firethorne Fishfire is not responsible for any electronic devices that get damaged or broken. Water damage due to wet children, spilt drinks, rain or even sprinklers going off have all been experienced at meets. Some examples of good items to bring are coloring books, playing cards, rainbow loom, Guess Who, Headbanz etc..
For evening meets you may also want to bring the following items.
- Mosquito spray
- Flash light or hurricane lamp so the kids can see in the tents. It can get very dark at times because often the swimmer set up area is not well lit.
- Blankets or jackets. Occasionally meets can run very late and children sitting in wet clothes can get cold once the sun goes down.
Meet Start Times
A few days before the swim meet you will be advised as to what time the swim meet will start. This will determine what time your swimmer will need to be at the pool and what time you will need to be at the pool for your volunteer shift. Generally, the coach would like swimmers at the pool 90 minutes before the meet starts. The volunteer coordinator will advise you as to what time you need to be at the pool for your volunteer shift, this varies job by job. Please note, it is possible that you may need to be at the pool before your swimmer.
As a general rule all meets that are on a Saturday will start between 8:00 am and 9:00 am and all meets on a week day will start between 5:00 pm and 6:00pm. Please bare this in mind when you sign-up for volunteer positions because it may require you having to leave work early to be at the meet to sign-in for your volunteer position on time.
